Zheng Qinwen vs Nadia Podoroska preview
Fifth seed and home favorite Zheng Qinwen will square off against Nadia Podoroska in the third round of the 2024 China Open on Monday, September 30.
In a breakthrough season so far on tour, Zheng entered Beijing with a 29-14 match record. She began the year impressively, reaching her first-ever Grand Slam final at the Australian Open, where she lost to Aryna Sabalenka. She then defended her crown at the Palermo Ladies Open to capture her only tour-level title yet this season.
Zheng secured her biggest scalp at the Olympics, winning gold with an emphatic victory over Croatia’s Donna Vekic in the final. She even upset favorite and top seed Iga Swiatek in the semifinals.
Before her home event, Zheng made a quarterfinal run at the US Open, again falling to eventual champion Sabalenka. She began her China Open campaign with a commanding 6-1, 6-1 win over Kamilla Rakhimova in the second round after receiving a first-round bye.
Podoroska, meanwhile, entered Beijing with a 25-26 season record. Her best result this year was a quarterfinal finish at the Thailand Open just last week, along with a third-round run at Indian Wells after qualifying. She also won a WTA 125 title at the Barranquilla Open in Colombia.
She kicked off her campaign in Beijing with a routine 6-4, 6-2 win over local Yufei Ren. In the second round, she faced a tougher challenge from 25th seed Dayana Yastremska but came through in a grueling three-set battle, 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-2.

Zheng Qinwen vs Nadia Podoroska prediction
Zheng Qinwen looked dominant in her opener, continuing her strong form from a solid hardcourt swing since Wimbledon. She was excellent on serve, winning 84% of points behind her first serve and a perfect 100% on her second serve. She didn’t face a single break point and was equally sharp on return, winning 30 return points and converting 5 out of 10 break point opportunities.
Nadia Podoroska, on the other hand, cruised through her opener but faced a tougher test in her previous match. She showed remarkable mental resilience and executed key plays in the crucial moments to secure a nervy victory. While her serving was average, she compensated with a strong return game, winning 61 return points out of 109 and breaking serve 10 out of 12 times. Her net play was also effective, winning over 80% of points when coming forward.
Zheng enters this match as the favorite, thanks to her recent form and better win index on hardcourts this year. With the raucous home support behind her, the match could be over quickly if Podoroska doesn't take the initiative early and play aggressively.
Pick: Zheng to win in straight sets.
