The Cincinnati Masters, also called the Western & Southern Open or the Cincinnati Open, is an annual outdoor hardcourt tennis tournament in Mason, Ohio, near Cincinnati. The tournament is more than 120 years old, having begun in 1899.

The men's event is part of the ATP Masters 1000 series, while the women's event is part of the WTA 1000 series. The Cincinnati Masters is also the penultimate summer tennis tournament in the United States after the US Open.

From August 12 to August 20, the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, will host the Cincinnati Masters 2023.

What is the Cincinnati Masters' 2023 prize money?

According to YardBarker, the Cincinnati Masters 2023 will have a prize pool of USD 10 million.

The 2023 Cincinnati Masters will be held from August 12 to August 20 and will have a prize pool of nearly $10 million. The prize money for the 2023 Cincinnati Masters will be $6,600,000 for the men's competition and $2,788,468 for the women's competition.

The ATP entry list features the two biggest stars on the ATP Tour, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, as well as the names of numerous contenders for the title, such as Holger Rune, Daniil Medvedev and Jannik Sinner, as well as home favorites Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz.

The WTA entry list includes the WTA's Big Three—Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina—who will be the clear favorites, but Ons Jabeur, Coco Gauff, and Jessica Pegula will all make an effort to nullify their dominance.

The runner-up of the women's tournament will receive 585 points and $267,690 in prize money. The finalist of the men's tournament will receive 600 points and $556,630. Further, mens semi finalists will receive 360 points and $304,375, while women will receive 350 points and $138,000.

What is the prize money for the Western & Southern Tennis Tournament?

The Western & Southern Open is synonymous with the Cincinnati Masters or Cincinnati Open. The name was chosen for sponsorship reasons. Since 2002, the Western & Southern Financial Group has held the naming rights, which were extended for three years in 2021.

The Western & Southern Open prize pool will be $10 million, with $6,600,000 for the men's event and $2,788,468 for the women's event.

In 2021, Katie Haas, COO of the Western & Southern Open, said, “The decades-long support from Western & Southern Financial Group has afforded us the opportunity to grow the Western & Southern Open into one of the premier events on the tennis calendar. Our partnership with Western & Southern has been critical in allowing us to showcase Cincinnati to a global audience, and we look forward to continuing this relationship for years to come.”

Prior to 2011, the tournament's name included the names of the title sponsor as well as both the men's and women's divisions, reading "Western & Southern Financial Group Masters and Women's Open." However in 2011, it was decided to combine the competitions into a single-week format, which resulted in the name change to "Western & Southern Open."

The Cincinnati Open was the original name of the tournament, however, Cincinnati Masters is now more frequently used due to the tournament's affiliation with the ATP Masters 1000 series.

When did the Cincinnati Masters begin?

The tennis tournament began in 1899 as the Cincinnati Open and was renamed in 1901 as the Tri-State Tennis Tournament. It would later go by a number of names, such as the ATP Championships, before evolving into the event that is currently held in Mason.

The initial tournament was held at the Avondale Athletic Club and due to changes in tournament management and playing surfaces, it was moved to a number of different locations.

The event was primarily played on clay courts until 1979, when it switched to hard courts. The first tournament was held in 1899 on clay courts, which were referred to as "crushed brick dust" in a newspaper article at the time.
