Citi Open: Somdev Devvarman through to 2nd round

Indian tennis ace Somdev Devvarman defeated lucky loser American Rhyne Williams to book a 2nd round berth in the ATP 500 event in Washington DC. Devvarman overcame Williams in straight sets 7-5 6-1 in an hour and 15 minutes.

The match started out with both players exchanging breaks as the set was neck and neck with the score reading 5-5. However, Devvarman found that crucial extra break of serve to take the first set 7-5. Using the momentum from the opening set, Somdev steamrolled his opponent in the 2nd set, breaking the American twice and raced away with the set to progress through to the 2nd round. Rhyne Williams had earlier lost out in the final qualifying stages of the tournament losing out to Australian Samuel Groth in 3 sets 6-2 6-7(5) 6-2.

In the qualifying rounds, Devvarman defeated Americans Jesse Witten 7-5 6-1 in the opening round.In the final qualifying round, Somdev defeated Christian Harrison in straight sets 6-0 6-1 to book a main draw berth. However, Somdev would have his task cut out as he would be up against defending champion and 9th seed Ukranian Alexander Dolgopolov in the 2nd round.
