10th seed Danielle Collins will square off against qualifier Destanee Aiava in the second round of the Australian Open 2025.

Collins took on qualifier Daria Snigur in the first round. The American went down a break in the opening set but broke back immediately to remain on even terms. She then held a set point on two of her opponent's service games but couldn't close out the set at that juncture.
The set went to a tie-break, in which Collins took the lead and remained in front to take the set. She raced to a 5-1 lead in the second set and held two match points on Snigur's serve in the seventh game but let them slip.
Collins had another match point on her own serve after that and again failed to get the job done as she dropped her serve. She put an end to Snigur's late surge with a break of serve to win the match 7-6 (4), 6-3.
Aiava came through the qualifying rounds with wins over Ana Bogdan, Panna Udvardy, and Eva Lys to book her place in the main draw. She was up against Greet Minnen in the first round.
Neither player came close to a break point for most of the first set, and a tie-break looked imminent. However, Minnen managed to snag a break of serve in the 12th game to clinch the set. She was on the cusp of victory and led 5-2 in the second set but Aiava reeled off the next five games to force a decider.
Minnen served for the match in the third set as well but failed to close it out. She even held two match points on Aiava's serve and faltered yet again. The Aussie made the most of her reprieve and came out on top in the ensuing tie-break to score a 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (5) win.

Collins snapped her six-match losing streak dating back to the Paris Olympics 2024 with her win over Snigur. She got a little tight when it was time to land the killing blow towards the end but got over the hump in the end.
Aiava staged a memorable comeback against Minnen to register her very first main draw win at a Major, and in front of her home crowd to boot. She will fancy her chances against Collins as well, who has been far from her best for a while now.
Collins appears to be a step slower these days and her rally tolerance is quite low. Her shot selection is questionable at times, and her serve has also lost a bit of its pop. The free-swinging Aiava has nothing to lose here, and if she shows the same grit from the previous round, then she could cause another upset here.
