Daniil Medvedev was involved in a thrilling four sets clash with defending champion, Carlos Alcaraz at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. The Russian lost the match 7-6(1), 3-6, 4-6, 4-6 in just over three hours. However, the match could have seen an abrupt end in the first set itself after Medvedev's angry outburst towards the chair umpire.
Medvedev was a break up at 5-3 in the first set with the score at 30-40 when a call from the umpire upset the Russian. The chair-umpire Asderaki-Moore called the ball 'not up', meaning that the ball has bounced twice and awarded the point to Alcaraz. Medvedev was unhappy with the call and started his war of words with the umpire.
Daniil Medvedev very lucky to avoid default during his Wimbledon 2024 SF clash
Daniil Medvedev's outburst towards the chair umpire at Wimbledon 2024 could have seen him being defaulted. The Russian was disappointed at a call from the umpire and vented out his frustration. The 28-year-old shouted 'f**k you' at the umpire three times before saying something in Russian.
The chair umpire was not happy with the Russian's behaviour and summoned the supervisors to discuss Medvedev's reaction. After a short discussion, the officials decided to give Medvedev a warning and allowed him to continue the match.
Talking to the media after his defeat, Medvedev said that he did not feel his outburst deserved a default and a warning was a fair result. The 28-year-old admitted that he said something to the umpire in Russian which was not pleasant but it was not worth a disqualification.
“I said something in Russian, not pleasant, but not over the line. So I got a code for it. (Should he have been defaulted?) Not at all because, as I say, I didn’t say anything too bad," Daniil Medvedev said.
Recently, Andrey Rublev was defaulted for a similar incident during the semifinal of the Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championships earlier in March. The Russian smashed his racquet and screamed at the linesman after he was denied a point by the chair umpire. Rublev said something towards the umpire in Russian and that was enough to default him.
Medvedev's recent outburst is very similar to Rublev's. Medvedev might have got lucky due to this being the semifinal of Wimbledon in front of a packed crowd. The magnitude of the occasion may have worked in the Russian's favour as he avoided an unfortunate exit.
This was not the first time the Russian had engaged with the chair umpire during a crucial match. Medvedev has made it a habit of getting into arguments with the officials which has cost him in important matches.
Daniil Medvedev and his history of controversies with match officials
Daniil Medvedev's on-court brilliance is often overshadowed by his angry gestures and words towards the umpires. The Russian often indulges in unpleasant conversations with the umpires. However, these arguments have ended up escalating in the past, like at the Australian Open in 2022.
Medvedev faced Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semifinal in Melbourne. Despite his victory, Medvedev's disagreement stole all the headlines. The Russian was engaged in a war of words with the referee and called him 'stupid' and a 'small cat'.
Medvedev was unhappy with Tsitsipas' father as he was constantly talking with Stefanos during the match. The Russian demanded that the umpire take some action but crossed his line while addressing the issue with the officials.
"Are you mad? His father can talk every point? Oh my God you are so bad. How can you be so bad in the semi-final of a Grand Slam? Look at me! I’m talking to you! Next time it should be a code violation. If you don’t do it, you are… how can I say it… a small cat," Daniil Medvedev told the umpire.
Medvedev was let off the hook with a warning on that occasion and was allowed to complete the match. The Russian ended up winning against Tsitsipas but lost to Rafael Nadal in the final.
Similarly, Medvedev was involved in an argument with the chair umpire during his Round of 16 exit from the 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters at the hands of Karen Khachanov. The Russian was given a point penalty as he smashed his racquet against the wall and yelled at the chair umpire. The 28-year-old was disappointed about a call which he felt should have gone in his favour.
“Who will take action? This ball is out there. Who will take responsibility? It’s not my responsibility to referee the matches. Open your eyes. Open your freaking eyes. Do something. It’s out," Medvedev screamed at the umpire.
Daniil Medvedev was given a point penalty on that occasion which seemed a fair result, given his outburst. The 28-year-old lost the match 6-3, 7-5, making an early exit from the competition.
Medvedev is one of the most expressive players on tour and wears his heart on his sleeves. He likes to rile up the fans in the stadium and harness that energy to his advantage, but sometimes he has gone too far, which has affected the his game.
Medvedev has often been in the headlines for the wrong reason and his outbursts are not only affecting his reputation on the tour but also his results in big matches.
