Medvedev started his 2025 season at the Australian Open and faced Thailand's Kasidit Samrej in the first round. The Russian was given a run for his money and he eventually eked out a 6-2, 4-6, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 to book his place in the second round of the Melbourne Major.

Daniil Medvedev vs Learner Tien prediction
Medvedev will enter the match as the heavy favorite to win given his hard-court quality. However, the Russian may be an outburst or two away from being in huge trouble from a temperament viewpoint.
Medvedev may have had a tough time in his first match at Melbourne Park but he was still mighty impressive on his first serve, winning 53 out of 58 serves, with 24 aces to his name. He also hit 48 winners, which was less than his unforced error count of 34.
The Russian may not be the most elegant player but his game is built around being effective. His serve, counterpunching, stamina and swift transitions from defense to attack make life difficult for even the best of players.
Tien, on the other hand, won just 74 out of 102 points (72.6%) on his first serve, serving seven aces. However, he also served 16 double faults and cannot afford too many of those. Another thing that the American cannot do too much is hit unforced errors, having accumulated 69 of those in his last match compared to 44 winners.
Tien will have to be aggressive and not shy away from his shots against Medvedev. The American is a quick mover and will heavily rely on his versatile shots. Tien will no doubt have to produce something close to the performance of his life if he is to stand a chance against Medvedev.
While Tien is a promising talent, the Russian's experience and superior quality should see him come out on top without much trouble and reach the third round of the Australian Open.
Pick: Medvedev to win in straight sets.
