With the 2024 Davis Cup group stage well underway, the top 16 nations continue to vie tooth and nail for a place in the knockout rounds of tennis's premier international tournament. After all teams completed their first group match over the opening couple of days, day 3 witnessed half of them face off in their second group stage match.
Prominent names such as Alexei Popyrin, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Denis Shapovalov, Tallon Griekspoor, and Matthew Ebden were among the few of the biggest names to take center stage on the third day. Teenagers Jakub Mensik and Joao Fonseca were also in the thick of things.
On that note, here’s a summary of the results from Day 3 of the 2024 Davis Cup.
Australia, Germany, and Canada breeze through, unscathed
Australia maintained their perfect record at the 2024 Davis Cup with a dominant 3-0 win over Czech Republic in Valencia. Thanasi Kokkinakis started strong for last year's runners-up with a hard-fought 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 victory over teenager Jakub Mensik.
Alexei Popyrin then secured a win in just six minutes leading 1-0 after Tomas Machac was forced to retire for the second time this week. Machac had previously retired from his opener against Carlos Alcaraz due to cramps with the score tied at one set each.
Doubles specialists Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell, the 2024 US Open men's doubles champion, then completed the sweep with a convincing 6-4, 6-2 win over Jakub Mensik and Adam Pavlasek.
The Germans, meanwhile, continued their perfect record in Zhuhai with a commanding 3-0 victory over Chile. Maximilian Marterer started with a 6-1, 6-3 rout of 162nd-ranked Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera before Yannick Hanfmann maintained his rich vein of form with a 7-5, 6-4 win against the highest-ranked player of the day, Alejandro Tabilo.
US Open men's doubles runner-up Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz added the finishing touches on a clinical win with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Barrios Vera and Matias Soto.
