Kasatkina kicked off her campaign in Eastbourne with a routine 6-4, 6-2 victory over Xinyu Wang in the opening round. She was put through a much tougher test in the second round against Yuan Yue, overcoming a slow start to eventually seal the win in three sets: 3-6, 6-4, 6-0.
Up against home favorite Emma Raducanu in the quarterfinals, Kasatkina struck first with an early break in the third game. Another break, courtesy of blistering ball striking, saw her wrap the opener comfortably. The pair traded breaks to open the second set, but it was Kasatkina who once again plowed ahead first. Two breaks in her favor proved decisive as she went on to seal an emphatic 6-2, 6-2 victory.
Paolini, on the other hand, opened her campaign against Elise Mertens in the second round after receiving a bye in the first. She advanced to the quarter-finals after Mertens was forced to retire down 5-2 in the first set.
Paolini then went up against an in-form Katie Boulter in the quarterfinals. She swept the Brit aside in the first set, dropping just one game on the back of some brilliant, commanding play from the back of the court. Both players were impressive on serve in the second set and forced a tie-breaker. A near-flawless performance by the Italian at the net helped her secure a 6-1, 7-6 (0) win.
