American Emma Navarro, the WTA ranked World No. 8, meets Chinese ace Wang Xiyu in the second round of the 2025 Australian Open.
Navarro progressed to the second round after a hard-fought first-round 6-7, 7-6, 7-5 defeat of fellow American Peyton Stearns. Wang had a more straightforward start to her campaign when she took the scalp of Australian Julia Grabher 6-1, 7-5 in the Round of 128.
The Chinese WTA World No. 108 made it into the second round of the Australian Open for the second time in her career.

Emma Navarro vs Wang Xiyu prediction

Both players are 23 years of age, but Navarro has greater experience on the WTA tour and has gone further in Major tournaments than Wang. Navarro appeared in last year's US Open semifinals where she was beaten by Aryna Sabalenko 6-3, 7-6. and has a Wimbledon quarterfinal appearance under her belt.
Wang was the more impressive junior, becoming junior World No. 1 in 2018, when she won a singles Grand Slam title at the 2018 US Open, defeating Clara Burel in the final. Both players have a WTA tour title on their resume - Navarro took the 2024 Hobart International trophy, while Wang won her maiden title in Guangzhou, defeating top seed Magda Linette in the final in 2023.
Navarro has the better momentum going into 2025. She reached the third round of the Australian Open last year, defeating Wang in the first round, and her performances in the Majors in 2024 - a fourth-round exit at Roland Garros, and her Wimbledon and US Open runs - have earned her an 8th seeding at this year's tournament. They also brought her the WTA's Most Improved Player award in December 2024.
Wang's 2024 run hasn't suggested she can reverse last year's result - but she's a stubborn performer, and as a left-hander can make life difficult for any player.
Pick: Navarro in three sets.
