Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Thiago Seyboth Wild preview
Second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas will begin his 2024 European Open campaign in the second round on Thursday, October 17, against Brazilian qualifier Thiago Seyboth Wild after receiving a first-round bye.
Tsitsipas has had a challenging season so far leading into Antwerp, with a 39-19 win-loss record so far. While he claimed a major title in Monte Carlo and found some success on clay, he has struggled to replicate that form on other surfaces.
The Greek's Grand Slam performances have also been underwhelming, with a French Open quarterfinal being his best result. He suffered a shocking first-round exit at the US Open most recently. Tsitsipas last featured at the Shanghai Masters, where he overcame Kei Nishikori and Alexandre Muller before losing 6-7(3), 3-6 to rival Daniil Medvedev in the Round of 16.
Seyboth Wild has also struggled for consistency this year, as reflected by his 20-23 win-loss record. His best results have been quarterfinal finishes in Rio de Janeiro and Kitzbuhel. Like Tsitsipas, Seyboth Wild also competed at the Shanghai Masters, where he also lost to Medvedev, but in the third round.
Seyboth Wild started his campaign in Antwerp this week as the second seed in the qualifiers. He overcame a tough challenge from local player Emilien Demanet, rallying from a set down, and then defeated sixth seed Mark Lajal to secure his spot in the main draw. In the first round, he earned a 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory over Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Thiago Seyboth Wild prediction
Stefanos Tsitsipas has endured one of his toughest seasons on hardcourts, posting a modest 15-11 record, with a semifinal appearance in Los Cabos as his best result. Since the start of the North American hardcourt swing, he's gone 3-5, with his first back-to-back wins coming just last week in Shanghai.
Thiago Seyboth Wild, like Tsitsipas, has also struggled on the surface this year, with most of his success coming on clay. He holds an 8-9 record on the surface and has gone 3-3 since the hardcourt swing began in the season's second half.
Though the pair has never faced off before, Tsitsipas is favored to win. Seyboth Wild has yet to defeat a player of Tsitsipas’s caliber this year and is likely to face a tough challenge against the Greek, despite both players dealing with inconsistent form lately.
While Tsitsipas didn’t make the deep run he hoped for in Shanghai last week, his performance offered several positives heading into Antwerp. He looks keen to end the season on a high and could seal a comfortable win if he plays his usual best.
Pick: Tsitsipas in straight sets.
