Fed-exits at Roland Garros.

Rolland Garros

Day 10 at the Philippe Chatrier court we witness the biggest upset as the World number 1 and defending champion Roger Federer out of the French Open after Robin Soldering the big 6ft 4inches from Sweden defeated the Swiss 6-3,3-6,5-7,4-6.

Roland Garros

The two met at last year finals and it was a sweet revenge for the big guy, it wasn’t surprising to see this result as he had already defeated the king of clay Rafael Nadal last year.

In the first set the way Federer was playing it seemed the game won’t take more than two hours but the Swede came back with some good serve and hard hitting forehand and level the score 6-3,3-6 second set.

The third set was more open where both the players playing some good tennis which led to 5-5, Federer was serving well and pulled some amazing shots but the Swede had other ideas he was playing with the same momentum and same strategy to the last set where he kept pushing Federer behind the base line with his hard forehand and big serve, he won the set with an ace 7-5.

To beat the world number 1 isn’t that easy, well Mother Nature did play her part. Rain suspended play which gave the Swede the advantage as the balls very getting heavier because the ground was wet and the sandy pitch adds to the weight. It was rare to see the world number 1 being pushed to some powerful hard hitting shots. The Swiss had an early breakpoint when he led the fourth set 2-0 but Soldering silence the crowd when he level 2-2. The world champion needed some motivation and he did when he won a love service game and leads 3-2,it didn’t take long for the Swede to get back to even terms 3-3 which gave him a breakpoint and after 5 deuce he led 4-3 serving with 225km/hr the fastest in the game.

We could hear Federer saying “common” trying to fight his way back but the damage was already done the Swede played with power and authority and took the game away from the defending champion much to the crowd disappointment the tall man from Sweden ended the 23 streak run of the world number one and reached his second successive semi final where he will play the man from Czech Republic Tomas Berdych who has never reached a grand slam semi final.

“It was great to play at this court which is my favourite and defeating the two best players cannot be much better”, says Robin Soldering. The road to the final seems a possibility for the Swede as he’s got more experience over the Czech on big matches. Are we going to see a Sol Nadal final well time will tell.
