Federer and Hingis get adventurous, Radwanska does the Full Monty and Murray mania goes mental

Agnieszka Radwanska, the sweet little innocent girl no more

Agnieszka Radwanska – Next up, Hollywood?

Of all the things that you’d expect Agnieszka Radwanska to do in her free time (my first two guesses would have been reading philosophy and playing chess), posing nude for a magazine would likely NOT have been one of them. But that’s just what sweet, innocent little Aga has gone ahead and done.

Joining the likes of Serena Williams, James Blake and John Isner, Radwanska dropped her clothes during a photoshoot for ESPN The Magazine’s ‘Body’ issue, which celebrates the most athletic bodies in the world. The Pole’s bold act has seemingly caught the eye of every person in the world with access to internet. Apparently, though, not everyone liked what they saw.

While the photoshoot has been well-received in the US, home of ESPN, it has kicked up a storm in the home of Radwanska. Tongues have been wagging almost non-stop in Aga’s native Poland, with the largely conservative Christian population of the country doing their best to vocally denounce her supposed lack of morality. Radwanska’s derring-do has even led to her being abandoned by a Catholic youth group of which she was a part, and priests have been quick to bemoan the fact that “she will always have to hide these pictures from her relatives”.

Is this much ado about nothing? Not if you’re a devoutly religious person from Poland, clearly.

Andy Murray next in line for…knighthood?

Andy Murray’s Wimbledon win, which – have you heard? – made him the first British male champion in 77 years, has done a lot of good things for his career and his legacy. But has it done enough for him to earn a knighthood? According to British Prime Minister David Cameron, it has.

Yes, you probably expected calls for Murray’s knighthood the moment he went up two sets to love against Novak Djokovic in the final. Heck, I actually saw several people put up a Facebook status like “Sir Andy Murray is one set away from the title!” – or something to that effect – while the Scot was scampering all over the court to frustrate Djokovic. But to hear the PM himself open himself up for ridicule by endorsing a knighthood for Murray? That came out of the blue.

Don’t get me wrong; I can completely sympathize with the plight of those unfortunate souls in the Queen’s land who had been starving for a homegrown champion for decades. But as has been so eloquently pointed out in this article, Murray still has a long, long way to go before he can accumulate a list of accomplishments worthy enough of earning himself that bright, shining armour.

I fully expected the British media to go ridiculously overboard the moment Murray lifted the trophy on Centre Court, but I did expect the people in power to show a little more restraint. Shows what I know. Take a bow, Mr. Cameron; you have outdone them all.
