Federer Vs Nadal : Friendship which transcends Tennis Rivalry

Sayan

The Australian open had the biggest upset today as the World no 1 Nadal lost to his Spanish compatriot Ferrer. This brings us to the important question ; when will we get to see a Federer-Nadal final again in a grand slam ? Finals because the duo have such a great hold on men’s tennis that since 2004 , these two have managed to win 24 out of 28 grand slams and have played in 7 finals since 2006. Talk of domination , this is much more than it. And because they have been so consistent, they have mostly been the numero uno and duo in men’s tennis with both of them trading places in alternate years. Yet the last time we managed to see a Federer-Nadal match in a grand slam was way back in the 2009 Australian Open final , which is remembered more for Federer’s break down rather than the match itself. Though the match itself was a cracker with some mesmerizing shots played by both players.

Here is only the part 1 of highlights and is nothing short of spectacular.

One of the strange yet interesting part of a Federer-Nadal rivalry is the healthy rivalry and friendship among the two greats of tennis, off court. They may be foes on court but outside the courts, rarely have we heard of such great friendship among two players who are so competitive on court. Here is an interesting video in which they ROFL

Another engrossing part of their friendship is that they both want the other to win if they are out of the tournament. How many times do we see this in other sports. Their rivalry might be a point to talk about in years but so will be their friendship. Their example demonstrates how people can be friends off court despite being close rivals on it.
