Federer wants to make it 7!

The Wimbledon Grand Slam 2012 has reached its final stage. After witnessing two excellent matches in the semi finals, tennis lovers are ready to witness the last match of this years Wimbledon.

Two best players out of 128 will play the final to become the champion of champions. There is no doubt, it will be a tough as well as an entertaining match. This is not about a title, this is about becoming the king of the England grass, in the people’s mind. Roger Federer will take on Andy Murray in the most charming final of the tournament on Sunday.

Roger Federer(3): Not only the tennis lovers, but the grass of the courts are also familiar to this athlete. Since 2002, he has qualified 8 times for the Wimbledon final, which is a record on this surface. Out of eight, he became champion of champions sic times. No doubt, he will looking to make a history by wining the title and will join the likes of Pete Sampras and Willie Reneshaw.

Not only this, if he wins the Wimbledon, he will be back at the number one position, which is currently occupied by Novak Djokovic. It has been two and half years since Fedex has won any title. But this year, the Wimbledon trophy seems to be heading to Switzerland. He looks hungry for the title, and it looks like it will be an easy task to beat Andy Murray.

- Roger federer beat Mikhail Mikhailovich Youzhny in the quarter final by 6-1 6-2 6-2 and in the semi final, the Swiss player beat the number one seed, Novak Djokovic in 4 sets; 6-3 3-6 6-4 6-3, which is a huge victory in all respects. In the last two years, he has played a few Grand Slam finals, but this one seems like he has already won it.

Andy Murray (4): The Scottish player is ready to play in his first Wimbledon final. Though it looks hard to beat Federer in this year’s Wimbledon final, still the Scottish player will like to think otherwise.

- Andy Murray beat David Ferrer in the quarter final by 6-7(5/7) 7-6(8/6) 6-4 7-6(7/4) and in the semis, he beat Jo-Wilfred Tsonga by 6-3 6-4 3-6 7-5.

Previous Meetings:

Last time, they met in final of the Dubai open 2012, where Federer beat Murray – 7-5 6-4. In their second last meeting, Federer beat Murray by 6-4 6-2 in London Open, 2010. Overall, they have met 15 times before this final, in which Murray has won eight times and Federer seven times.

This is for the first time that they will play against each other in the Wimbledon.

“I missed being in the finals here the last couple of years, obviously,” said the 30-year-old Federer, who has lost only one of his seven Wimbledon finals, the epic five-set defeat by Rafael Nadal in 2008.

“He [Murray] is only going to get better as time goes by, that’s what he’s been proving. He’s actually handled it very well from what I’ve seen from afar.”

“I always say, in whatever country I am, I like to play the local hero and Andy is exactly that at Wimbledon.”

“I hope I have some crowd support, but it’s not the most important thing right now.”

Federer said, “Of course, there’s a lot on the line for me. I’m not denying that. I have a lot of pressure. I’m looking forward to that. That’s what I work hard for.”

“I’ve worked extremely hard since I lost that match point against Novak last year at the US Open. My run has been extremely good. Now I have a shot at world number one and at the title again, all at once.”

“So it’s a big match for me and I hope I can keep my nerves. I’m sure I can. Then hopefully win the match.”

‘I didn’t break down crying and fall to my knees and thought the tournament is over and I achieved everything I ever wanted.”

“Honestly, it happens faster than you think it does. Then all of a sudden you come out the next match and you’re not the same anymore because you’re emotionally too drained already and you think it’s been a great tournament.”

“I know it’s been a great tournament, but we’ll assess that once the tournament is over. Right now, I want to try to play the best possible final I can.”

“I’ve played a lot of tennis lately. I’m maybe the guy with most matches played this year, so it’s not like I’ve been on the sidelines. I think that helps in building confidence and momentum.”

“Obviously you want it to pay off in the big matches against the best of the players. It didn’t happen for me at the French Open unfortunately, but it was a tough tournament overall for me.

‘Obviously, I’d love to win the title. I have one more match to go. Still it’s always nice beating someone like Novak, who has done so well here the last couple of years.”

“It was obviously a big occasion. These matches only help my confidence. I hope I can use it for the final.”

When asked about Pete, “Everybody knows what a hero he is to me and how much I admire what he’s been able to achieve in tennis,” Federer said. “I don’t think he ever lost a grand slam final here at Wimbledon, he won seven out of seven, which is just incredible, particularly in the times he played against all those big servers, when things were a bit more unpredictable. So I’m very proud to have a shot of equalling Pete, but right now the focus is obviously resting and preparing for the next match.”

“I admired how he stuck around, how he tried to win maybe one more, maybe two more,” Federer said. “Obviously, it was a big surprise and a shock that I was able to break his five Wimbledon’s in a row here. It was an inspiration for sure to see somebody while I was coming up dominating the game and breaking the all-time grand slam record.”

Federer broke Sampras’s record of 14 grand slam titles when he won here three years ago. Another two records could be matched on Sunday.

“It reminds me a bit of Australia because you don’t have the amount of players they have in France or America, so the focus is more on one player, maybe a couple,” he said.

“I think what is so particular about this country is that there’s so much attention on that one player, which is Andy Murray. Let’s be happy that he’s such a great player that he lets that sort of hype last.”

“He’s only going to get better as time goes by. That’s what he’s been proving and I think he’s handled it [the pressure] very well.”

“All I hoped for was a good match from me, to give myself a chance to be in the finals, to have a shot at the trophy again” he said.

“It’s great. That’s what my goal was going into the match, not looking ahead trying to prove a point or anything like that.

“I feel I’ve played plenty of tennis over the years and had so much success that I don’t think I really need to do that.”

“I have one more match to go. I’m aware of that,” said Federer, who is 6-1 in Wimbledon finals. “Still, it’s always nice beating someone like Novak, who has done so well here last year, the last couple years.”

“There’s obviously a lot on the line for me in terms of winning here, the all-time Grand Slam record, world No. 1,” Federer said. “I’m also going into that match with some pressure, but I’m excited about it. That’s what I play for.”

“It obviously would be very nice,” Murray acknowledged in his post-match press conference.

“But I can’t allow myself to think that far ahead, it’s not really beneficial. I’ll just focus on getting the tactics right.”

“There’s obviously going to be nerves and pressure, but I need to try to stay focused.”

“Tonight I think I need to make sure I enjoy the win. It’s not every day you’re through to the final of a Grand Slam, and also Wimbledon.”

“Then tomorrow, get back on the practice court and make sure I hit enough balls and get focused for Sunday.”

“On Sunday, and almost every time you step on the court, you’re trying to prove something to yourself,” he said. “I think that’s kind of what motivates you to get better.

“You can’t stay at the top of any sport, especially one as competitive as tennis, if you don’t have very good self-motivation. I think that’s very important. Obviously I’ll be very motivated on Sunday.”

“Big relief,” Murray said. “I’ve just got to try to keep it together for the final.”

Minutes after the match ended, British Prime Minister David Cameron called the victory “great news.”

“I’ll be watching the final on Sunday and like the rest of the country will be getting right behind Andy Murray,” Cameron said in a statement. “I wish him the best of luck.”

“I’ve had experience playing Roger in the finals of Slams before,” Murray said. “I’m going to use that to my advantage and learn from my mistakes and also the things he did well.”

“Hopefully,” Murray said, “I can go one better on Sunday.”

“For Andy, this is an amazing achievement,” said Rafael Nadal, who lost in the second round at this year’s tournament, “To be in the final, to be playing against the best in history in Roger Federer.”

“He has been fighting for this for a long time and now it has happened. I am very happy for him.”

“To be in so many Wimbledon semi-finals [three before this year] and not be in the final is disappointing for him, but I knew that the chance would come again and that if it did come, he would take it.”

Three-time winner John McEnroe said: “Murray is in the prime of his career, this is the absolute best we have ever seen him play.”

“Roger Federer is close to what he was in his prime, but you would think this is the opportunity where Murray can learn from his mistakes.”

“Andy has a shot, but he’s dealing with the hopes and dreams of a nation,” said Pete Sampras.

“Roger’s the favourite, but anything can happen out there if Andy serves well, if he plays aggressive and goes for his shots.”

“If he gets passive against Roger, Roger will win. Andy’s going to have to take his chances. He can’t just hang back against Roger and hope he misses.”
