Alex de Minaur vs Alex Michelsen preview
Eleventh seed Alex de Minaur will play USA's Alex Michelsen in the first round of the 2024 French Open on Tuesday (May 28).
De Minaur is currently enjoying a career-best season on the ATP Tour. The Aussie reached a career-high ranking of World No. 9 in February this year, before winning his eighth career title in Acapulco a few weeks later.
The 25-year-old has been consistent in 2024, having reached at least the Round of 16 in four of the five ATP Masters 1000 tournaments. More notably, he has defeated both Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal in straight sets this year, which is a feat not many have achieved.
Michelsen, meanwhile, has had a mercurial rise on the men's tour over the last year. The 19-year-old reached his first ATP final before turning pro at the 2023 Hall of Fame Open, where he was downed by veteran Adrian Mannarino. Since then, he has climbed to 60th in the ATP rankings.
That said, the young American has yet to prove himself on claycourts. Unlike De Minaur, who has been steadily improving on the dirt, Michelsen owns an underwhelming record on clay. He has dropped eight of his 12 matches on the surface during the ongoing European claycourt swing.

Michelsen leads de Minaur 1-0 in their head-to-head meetings on the ATP Tour. The teenager defeated the Aussie as an alternate at this year's Los Cabos Open.

Alex de Minaur vs Alex Michelsen odds
De Minaur comes in as the overwhelming favorite in the "Battle of the Alex's," as he has shown a good aptitude for clay this season. His shots have become heavier in weight on both wings, allowing him to dictate rallies. The Aussie is also one of the best defenders on the men's tour, which would make it increasingly difficult for his younger opponent to hit winners past him.
Michelsen also has good groundstrokes, but he doesn't possess nearly the same consistency as De Minaur. The American's strongest weapon is his serve, with which he can get plenty of points. That said, clay is generally very slow and negates the impact of big serves, meaning he will have to come up with something special from behind the baseline.
While De Minaur will most likely win this match, he will have to be wary of Michelsen's big-hitting. If the former blinks for a moment, he might see his first-round match at the French Open turn into a scuffle.
Pick: De Minaur in four sets
