Emma Navarro vs Zeynep Sonmez preview
Twenty-second seed Emma Navarro will kick off her French Open 2024 campaign against Zeynep Sonmez in the first round on Tuesday, May 28.
Navarro kicked off her 2024 season with a run to the final in Auckland, going down to compatriot Coco Gauff. She went one step better the following week as she beat Elise Mertens for the title in Hobart.
Navarro reached the third round in Melbourne but lost to Dayana Yastremska in a tight three-set battle. She reached the last four in San Diego and the quarterfinals in Indian Wells.
She has not been able to translate that good form on the clay, however, and currently lingers with a 3-4 record on the surface so far. She heads into the French capital on the back of a couple of second-round exits in Rome and Strasbourg against Paula Badosa and Beatriz Haddad Maia respectively.
Sonmez, meanwhile, has featured scarcely on the professional tour as she primarily plies her trade on the ITF and WTA 125 circuit. Her two appearances were at the Brisbane International, where she went down to Clara Burel, and at the Qatar Open where she went down to Lesia Tsurenko.
She fell in the final round of qualifying in the Australian Open and is set to make her Grand Slam debut at the 2024 French Open.
Emma Navarro vs Zeynep Sonmez head-to-head
Emma Navarro and Zeynep Sonmez have never faced each other in professional competition before and hence their head-to-head currently stands at 0-0.

Emma Navarro vs Zeynep Sonmez prediction
Emma Navaro holds a slight edge over Zeynep Sonmez heading into their first-round encounter, given her form on tour this season.
The American took the WTA by storm at the start of the season but has been off-color ever since they moved to the clay. While it should be noted that clay is her least favored surface, there is no denying that she's lacking consistency in her game, something she showed in bucketloads at the start of the year.
Sonmez, meanwhile, has impressed on the ITF circuit this season with her flair and tenacity and has been touted to come good on the professional circuit very soon.
The pair will have to be at their best during their clash. The one who holds their nerve better on the bigger points could ultimately emerge victorious. Serving well and dictating points from the baseline will be non-negotiable, and the player who does it better could come out on top.
Pick: Emma Navarro in three sets.
