Rune began his clay swing at the Monte-Carlo Masters, where he was the runner-up last year. He could only make the quarterfinals this time, going down to the in-form Jannik Sinner in three sets.
Rune's title defence at the BMW Open in Munich came to an end in the semifinals against Jan-Lennard Struff, losing 6-2, 6-0. He only reached the third round of the Madrid Open and the Italian Open, concluding his pre-French Open prep with a 6-4 record on clay.
Evans has been in dire form the entire season, winning just three matches. Aside from his first-round wins in Adelaide, Los Cabos and Miami, he crashed out in the first round everywhere else.

Evans, meanwhile, has struggled even more. He's yet to win a match on clay, and given his record at the French Open, that seems like a long shot as well. The Brit is 1-6 in Paris in his career, reaching the second round only once, in 2022.
Rune, meanwhile, made the quarterfinals of the French Open in both his previous appearances. While the young Dane is far from his best level, he should make light work of a slumping Evans to advance.
