Hubert Hurkacz vs Brandon Nakashima preview

Eighth-seeded Hubert Hurkacz will face USA's Brandon Nakashima in the second round of the 2024 French Open.
Hurkacz has been one of the top players on the ATP Tour in the 2020s. The Pole has enjoyed a good European claycourt swing in 2024. He won his first title on the dirt at the Estoril Open, before defeating Rafael Nadal en route to the quarterfinals of the Italian Open.
The 27-year-old was taken to the distance by Japanese qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki in the first round of the claycourt Major on Saturday (May 26). He trailed his younger opponent by two sets to one, but had enough in his tank to pull out a 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 victory in just over three hours.
Nakashima, on his part, was also embroiled in a tough match in his opener, needing two hours and 51 minutes to beat fellow American Nicolas Moreno De Alboran 6-1, 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-2. The 22-year-old is looking to make plenty of amends in 2024 after suffering from a debilitating knee injury at the beginning of the last season.
The 2022 NextGen Finals winner would eventually take a two-month injury lay-off in 2023, which hurt his momentum. However, he is just as good this year as he was then; he showed a good aptitude for clay during the Barcelona Open in April, not dropping his serve in a straight-set victory over Andrey Rublev.
Hubert Hurkacz vs Brandon Nakashima head-to-head
Hubert Hurkacz and Brandon Nakashima are yet to face off on the ATP Tour, so their head-to-head record stands at 0-0.

Hubert Hurkacz vs Brandon Nakashima preview

Hurkacz is one of the most all-round players on the men's tour currently. The Pole has an evenly balanced baseline game, with his open-stance defensive backhand being one of his biggest weapons. That said, the World No. 8's serve is his most dependable weapon; he has hit 430 aces in 2024 alone and 21 of those came in his first-round victory in Paris.
Nakashima isn't as well-rounded as Hurkacz, but he is perhaps the more solid player from the baseline. The American has one of the best backhands on the pro tour. He also possesses a quick-fire return, which will do well to counteract the effect of his 6'5" opponent's accurate serve.
The match will likely come down to which player gets the most out of their primary weapons. Nakashima could eke out a surprise win over the World No. 8 if he maintains his margins and puts his opponent under pressure from the back of the court constantly.
Pick: Nakashima in five sets.
