World number 17 Francesca Schiavone became the first Italian to reach a grand slam final when No.5 seed Elena Dementieva retired after the first set of their semi-final clash with leg problems . “Now I start to feel that it is really big history,” she said. “We are happy I think in Italy, also”. The Australian Stosur has been in good form throughout the tournament when she defeated former No.1 and fourth seed Jelena Jankovic 6-1, 6-2 in the semi final.

Schiavone has got all the variety a champion would have but it will take guts, confidence and belief to win her first Major as she has always been an emotional player, it’s either she is playing some very good tennis or throws the game away while on the other hand Stosur who has beaten four-time champion Justine Henin and World No. 1 Serena Williams this is her best performance of the of her career and is the favourite to win the women’s title. “After the match against Justine, I really showed myself something there,” she said “And then [after coming back from a match point to beat Serena] even more again. So today I just tried to do exactly that: make it about the tennis and playing the points. But it’s not easy to do that all the time, and you can go in and out of it. But today it was just next point, give me the balls, and we’ll go again.”

“ I think Samantha has a very big chance,” Jankovic said. “She played so well this tournament, and she has beaten the favourites of this tournament. She’s playing very, very well. I think she’ll do it.

With all the cards on the Australian can the world number 17 prove everybody wrong? These two have never won a Grand Slam or either reached the finals of any majors – it is certain that this year history will be made at Roland Garros in the women’s singles.
