The French Open is one of the four major tennis tournaments and is considered by many the hardest of them all. Originally established in 1891 as the French Championship, the event was initially played on grass courts.
From 1892 to 1907, the event moved to sand courts, and in 1908, it finally took place on clay courts, the latter is the reason to be considered hardest, as the bounce is higher and the surface is slow.
The French Championships were restricted to French citizens and members of particular French clubs until 1924. However, from 1925 onwards, the tournament became eligible for nationalities. Françoise Dürr and Jean-Claude Barclay were the first Open Era champions, defeating Billie Jean King and Owen Davidson with a score of 6-1, 6-4.
