The 2025 Australian Open is officially underway, kicking off with a bang on Sunday, January 12. Big names such as Leylah Fernandez, Alexander Zverev, and defending champion Aryna Sabalenka hit the courts, setting the stage for what’s sure to be an exciting tournament.

While the action on the court is what we’re all here for, the players' outfits are just as much a part of the conversation. Whether they're bold, sleek, or a bit out there, tennis fashion always turns heads. And Day 1 of the Happy Slam certainly didn’t disappoint.

With that in mine, let’s take a closer look at the standout outfits from Day 1 of the 2025 Australian Open—some that wowed us and others that left us scratching our heads.

#5 Best - Donna Vekic

Donna Vekic began her Australian Open campaign in Melbourne with a straightforward 6-4, 6-4 victory over Diane Parry, captivating the audience not just with her on-court performance, but also with her stylish outfit choice.

Vekic, who debuted her own clothing line, Donna Sport, in collaboration with Uomo Sport in 2023, continues to make a statement with her fashion choices. For this year's Australian Open, she opted for a clean, crisp white top paired with a navy-blue pleated skirt, striking the perfect balance of elegance without being too flashy.

The Croat finished her look with crisp white sneakers, adding a sleek touch to her outfit. She complemented the ensemble with a white bracelet on her left wrist and a minimalist necklace.

#4 Worst - Alexander Zverev

Last year's semifinalist, Alexander Zverev, began his Australian Open campaign with a commanding 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win over Frenchman Lucas Pouille, as he eyes his first Grand Slam victory. However, his outfit didn't quite match his performance, falling short of expectations in terms of style.

Zverev's outfit featured a red Adidas t-shirt paired with maroon shorts, creating a disjointed look that lacked cohesion. While the vibrant red added some energy, the muted maroon shorts created an off-balance effect.

The red headband, a matching addition, only added to the overly monochromatic approach, making it appear as though he was trying to salvage the look but didn't quite succeed. The gold chains provided a touch of personal flair, but they felt out of place, and the red sneakers with white stripes didn't manage to grab attention either.

#3 Best - Casper Ruud

Casper Ruud had to work hard to overcome Jaume Munar in a thrilling five-set battle at the Australian Open, eventually securing a 6-3, 1-6, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 win. But while his match required grit, his style was effortlessly on point, as usual.

Ruud, sponsored by Yonex, wore a cream-colored athletic T-shirt with subtle red accents on the shoulders. He paired it with vibrant red shorts that added a striking pop of color to his look.

To complete the ensemble, the Norwegian opted for matching red shoes and crisp white socks. A cream-and-red headband and wristbands tied the outfit together, giving him a polished and coordinated appearance on the court.

#2 Worst - Aryna Sabalenka

Aryna Sabalenka's performance against Sloane Stephens at the Australian Open was dominant, with a 6-3, 6-2 victory. However, her fashion choice didn't quite hit the mark despite the custom Nike kit she wore.

Sabalenka stepped on the court in a neon yellow tank top and skirt, a color so bright it almost became distracting, clashing harshly with the cool blue of the court. The tank's racerback design, while functional for movement, didn't do much to enhance the overall look.

The one redeeming element was her choice of white shoes, which featured subtle orange accents. They brought a touch of style to the ensemble and helped tone down the overwhelming brightness of the outfit.

#1 Best - Leylah Fernandez

Leylah Fernandez kicked off her Australian Open campaign with a solid 7-5, 6-4 win over Yuliia Starodubtseva. Not only did she deliver a strong performance, but she also made quite an impression with her on-court appearance.

Fernandez donned a magenta dress from her sponsor Lululemon, featuring a fitted top and a pleated skirt that perfectly combined style with functionality, allowing seamless movement on the court.

Her off-white sneakers, accented with pink and teal details, complemented her dress effortlessly. She kept her accessories minimal with two delicate silver necklaces, offering a subtle personal touch.

Overall, the Canadian's look was a standout—straightforward, functional, and undoubtedly the best from Day 1 in Melbourne.
