Ashlyn Krueger will square off against fifth seed Magdalena Frech in the second round of the Guadalajara Open Akron 2024 on Thursday, September 12. The pair will play the last match of the day at Akron Stadium after Jelena Ostapenko and Marina Stakusic's encounter.

Krueger might have had a timid start to the season, but she has shown significant improvement in her singles performance ever since the beginning of the North American hardcourt swing. She navigated through the qualifiers in Toronto and Cincinnati, losing to Jessica Pegula and Diana Shnaider in the third and second rounds respectively.

Krueger registered her first-ever Grand Slam win at the US Open against Shuai Zhang in the first round, coming back from a set down to seal a 0-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory.

She backed it up with another big win over Mirra Andreeva before succumbing to 16th seed Liudmila Samsonova in the third round. Krueger kicked off her campaign in Guadalajara with a routine 7-5, 6-2 win over German veteran Tatjana Maria.

Frech entered Guadalajara with a 31-25 match record for the year. She had a relatively decent first half of the season, reaching the fourth round at the Australian Open and the quarterfinals in Nottingham. In July, she made her first career WTA final in Prague but lost to compatriot Magda Linette.

The Pole advanced through the qualifiers in Cincinnati but was defeated by seventh seed Zheng Qinwen in the second round. At the Monterrey Open, Frech led Emma Navarro by a set in the quarterfinals but failed to convert her chances, eventually losing in three sets.

Her US Open campaign ended in the first round with a disappointing loss to Greet Minnen. Seeded fifth in Guadalajara this week, Frech kicked off her campaign with a dominant 6-4, 6-4 win over Emina Bektas in the first round.

Krueger displayed strong form in her opener, winning 71% of points behind her first serve and hitting 4 aces. Her baseline game was solid with minimal unforced errors, and her aggressive backhand helped her to convert 5 of 10 break-point opportunities.

Frech was equally impressive in her opener, winning 84% of points behind her first serve and notching 11 aces. She was as efficient on the return, converting 3 of 5 break point opportunities. Her effective net play also stood out, making it a force to be reckoned with on the slightly faster hardcourt in Guadalajara.

Both players have been in strong form recently and have enjoyed much of their success on hard courts this year. While Frech's ranking and experience give her the advantage on paper, the up-and-coming American could certainly produce another surprise, as she has been known to do recently.

The outcome could ultimately boil down to who serves better and makes early gains on the return.

Pick: Krueger in three sets.
