Ernests Gulbis of Latvia who is presently ranked as World No.40 shocked World No.1 Roger Federer by defeating him by 2-6,6-1 and 7-5 at the Rome Masters on Tuesday. Following his win, Gulbis enters the third round of the tournament.
The French and Wimbledon Open Champion Federer won the first set by 2-6 keeping Gulbis at the back foot.. In this opening sets, Gulbis committed too many errors which cost him dear as the top seed Federer got breaks in the first and seventh game.
The unseeded Latvian captured the second set as Federer’s game was marred by too many unforced errors. The Swiss maestro missed a smash and gave up two break points before a wild forehand which saw him lagging behind by 5-1. Ultimately, Gulbis sealed the set in his favor by 6-1.
In the final and decisive set, Federer saved two match points at 3-5 in the ninth game on his serve after he has broken in the fifth game. Gulbis also missed four match points and hit two double faults. But Federer’s unforced errors saw him dropping the serve and Gulbis served in the match for second time and won the set and the match.
The weather-hit match saw both players committing too many mistakes. However it was Gulbis who hit 33 winners in comparison to Federer’s 20.
