Bublik commenced his title defence against qualifier Max Purcell. The Kazakh initially led by a break in the first set but squandered his lead as the two were back on even terms.
The set eventually went to a tie-break, in which Bublik outplayed Purcell to capture the set. The pair traded service breaks to start the second set but remained steady on serve after that. The defending champion snagged another break in the ninth game, after which he served out the match to register a 7-6 (1), 6-4 win.
Eubanks was drawn against Pedro Martinez in the first round. The American struck first in the opening set as went up 3-0 due to an early break of serve. He maintained an iron grip on the lead and soon clinched the opener.
Eubanks took another step towards victory as he secured a break of serve to start the second set. However, Martinez managed to get back on serve as he showed signs of resistance. The American didn't let his comeback flourish and bagged the last three games of the match for a 6-3, 6-4 win.

Eubanks scored a much-needed win as he snapped his seven-match losing skid by beating Martinez. The American won 78 percent of his first serve points and fired 12 aces en route to his fifth win of the season.
Bublik's title defence was off to a strong start as he quelled a rising challenge from Purcell. He rained down 14 aces but also threw in eight double faults in an uneven serving performance.
Given their results this year, Eubanks is naturally the underdog in this match-up. He enjoyed considerable success on grass last year, winning his maiden career title at the ATP level in Mallorca and then making the quarterfinals of Wimbledon.
However, the American hasn't matched those highs since then. Bublik's consistency varies from match to match as well but he has been in better form compared to Eubanks. The defending champion will be backed to continue his journey in Halle.
