Amanda Anisimova vs Elina Avanesyan preview
The quarterfinals at the Hobart International will have Amanda Anisimova and Elina Avanesyan lock horns in an explosive, all-seeded match-up on Thursday.
Anisimova, the third seed at this year’s tournament, got off the mark in the new season with a 6-3, 6-3 first-round victory over Daria Saville. She has followed it up with another straight-sets win against Anna Bondar to improve her win-loss record to 2-1.
The American’s opening loss at Auckland was an error-strewn 6-2, 3-6, 2-6 defeat to Alycia Parks, and continues to cast a shadow on her. She will be keen on moving past it by posting a big result in Hobart.
Avanesyan, the sixth seed, meanwhile, seems to be building on an already solid start to the season. She opened her 2025 campaign with a round-of-16 showing at Brisbane, scoring big wins over the likes of Paula Badosa and Rebecca Sramkova before losing in three sets to Ons Jabeur.
Here in Hobart, the Armenian has put together another two wins over Wang Xiyu and Greet Minnen to improve her win-loss to 4-1. She now faces a tall order against the big-hitting Anisimova.

Amanda Anisimova vs Elina Avanesyan prediction
Both Amanda Anisimova and Elina Avanesyan possess strong baseline games and enjoy taking big swings at the ball. The aggressive play, however, comes more naturally to the former.
The American, when playing at her best, can hit any opponent on the court with her raw power. It is her inability to control said power that often becomes her undoing in matches. Playing against a steady opponent like Avanesyan, her patience might be tested once again.
The Armenian, who first shot to prominence with her results on the slower clay, has in recent times developed a liking for quicker surfaces as well. Her newfound aggression has also improved her chances against big hitters as evidenced by her win over Paula Badosa.
Avanesyan has always been a great counter puncher but it's her willingness to take the ball early and go down the line every chance she gets that has been bothering opponents. Anisimova will need to be careful and not allow her opponent too much time on the ball.
The American has been shaky in some of the tight moments in her matches early in the season, squandering many breakpoint chances already. She has the game to take the racket away from her opponent, but she is yet to show that sort of consistency and form on the court. If she isn’t careful with her shots, Avanesyan could well make her pay.
Prediction: Avanesyan to win in two tight sets
