Holger Rune's birthplace
Holger Rune was born in Gentofte, Denmark, on 29 April 2003.
Rune was born to Aneke Rune and Anders Nødskov in Gentofte, in the northern suburbs of Copenhagen. In a May 2023 ATP YouTube video named "Origins | Holger Rune," it was disclosed that his sister Alma, the family's first tennis player, was the reason he began playing the sport.
Alma said that her brother was devoted to the sport from a young age, a quality of Rune that is emphasized as the secret to his success in the 16-minute mini-documentary. Alma said, "We practiced a lot together; my mom would book a court, and we would just practice until it was dark in the evening." The documentary includes interviews with Rune's family, as well as his lifelong coach and former ATP pro, Lars Christensen, who began working with him at the age of seven. By the age of 13, he began training at the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy.
Rune describes his obsession with tennis as, "I don't think about tennis 24/7, but I think about what's necessary for my tennis 24/7." His coach, Christensen, also echoed similar feelings, saying, "If you want to become the very best in the sport, you're never going to reach it if you don't have that drive."
