Ninth-seeded Bernarda Pera will open her 2024 Hong Kong Open campaign with a first-round match against Japan's Sara Saito. Pera has had an indifferent season in 2024 so far, without making deep runs at any of the events that she has played. She is entering the event in Hong Kong after her most successful stint of the season at the Guangzhou Open, where she lost 4-6, 5-7 to Katerina Siniakova in the quarterfinal.

In other events, the American player has mostly faltered in the first two rounds. She won her first-round matches at the Adelaide International, BNP Paribas Open, Italian Open, Hungarian Grand Prix, and the Wuhan Open. Most notably she reached the third round at Wimbledon, where she defeated former Grand Slam semi-finalist Caroline Garcia 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round. She lost 1-6, 3-6 against Jelena Ostapenko in the next round.

Sara Saito has mostly played her matches on the ITF tour. The Japanese player has not played in the main draw WTA-level events to that extent in 2024. However, she had a very successful event at the Japan Open in Osaka a few weeks ago, back where she reached the quarterfinal, losing 5-7, 4-6 to Kimberly Birrell.

The Hong Kong Open is only the fifth event Saito is taking part in on the WTA Tour this year. The five events include the two Majors at the French Open and the US Open. However, the Japanese player could not qualify for the main draw in either of them, losing to Lucija Ciric Bagaric in Paris, and Iryna Shyamanovich in New York.
