Andrey Rublev vs Fabian Marozsan preview
After a first-round bye, top seed Andrey Rublev will commence his title defense at the Hong Kong Open 2025 in the second round against Fabian Marozsan on January 2.
Rublev endured a few ups and downs in 2024 but still managed to end the season ranked No. 8, his fifth consecutive finish inside the top 10. The highlight of his year was winning his second Masters 1000 title in singles at the Madrid Open, as well as winning the title here in Hong Kong. He also reached the final of the Canadian Open, and was one of four players to beat World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in 2024.
Rublev had a disappointing turn at the Majors last year. He advanced to the quarterfinals at three different Majors in 2023 but could do the same only once in 2024. His loss at the Australian Open marked the 10th time he was eliminated in the quarterfinal stage of a Major.
While Rublev received a first-round bye in singles at the Hong Kong Open, he has kept himself occupied with doubles in the meantime. Teaming up with Karen Khachanov, the duo have booked their place in the semifinals with a couple of straight-set wins.
Marozsan, meanwhile, was up against Roman Safiullin in the first round here. He cruised through the first set, and dropped only one game en route to claiming it. The second set was more competitive, partly due to the Hungarian's failure to capitalize on his chances.
Marozsan led by a break on four occasions, served for the match twice, and had four match points in the second set. However, Safiullin dug deep to get himself out of trouble and force a tie-break. The Hungarian blew another two match points in it before coming out on top to register a 6-1, 7-6 (9) win.

Andrey Rublev vs Fabian Marozsan prediction
Marozsan needed seven match points to get the job done against Safiullin in his opener here. He squandered his lead on numerous occasions in the second set but held his nerve in the end. He won 73 percent of his first-serve points, and struck 27 winners in comparison to 23 unforced errors.
Rublev is already off to a great start in Hong Kong after reaching the semifinals in doubles. He will aim to make a winning start to his title defense in singles as well. He tallied almost twice the number of wins as Marozsan last year. The former had 43 wins, while the latter had 26 victories.
Marozsan almost beat Rublev when they met last year but the latter rallied from a set down to emerge victorious. The Hungarian's losing record against top-10 players in 2024, 3-6 to be precise, also tips the scales in the Russian's favor in this encounter.
Pick: Andrey Rublev to win in straight sets.
