The Australian Open is firmly underway and in full swing as it nears the end of its second round on Thursday (16 January). There were a few upsets on the men's side of the draw, with fifth and sixth seeds Daniil Medvedev and Casper Ruud suffering shock exits. The women's draw continues as expected, with a majority of the heavyweights matching expectations.
Frances Tiafoe and Hubert Hurkacz are among some other big names, including Felix Auger-Aliassime, Sebastian Korda, and Amanda Anisimova, to be eliminated from the tournament in the second round. All second-round singles losers will receive a prize money of A$200,000 (approx. US$125,000) for their efforts. This marks an 11.11% increase from the 2024 Australian Open's prize money allotted to second-round losers at A$180,000 (approx. US$112,000).
American Tiafoe failed to equal his compatriots Ben Shelton and Taylor Fritz's efforts. The former was sent home packing by Hungarian Fabian Marozsan after a five-set thriller at the Australian Open on Thursday (16 January).
Having departed at the same stage last year, Tiafoe looked well placed to better his previous showing in Melbourne after being 2-1 up against Marozsan with the Hungarian under severe pressure in the fourth set.
However, Tiafoe would win a mere three out of 20 break points in the match. The American squandered a staggering 10 break points in what could have been the winner, but after going 0 for 10 in the fourth set, Marozsan clawed his way back into the game. He would eventually take a 5-0 lead in the fifth set and come out on top in the decider 6-1 to make it to the third round of the Australian Open.
Sixth-seeded Casper Ruud shown the exit door by 19-year-old Jakub Mensik at 2025 Australian Open
Three-time Grand Slam runner-up and the highest-ranked Norwegian tennis player in history, Casper Ruud, was beaten by 19-year-old Czech sensation Jakub Mensik. This victory marks Mensik's fifth win against the Top 10 in his last seven games versus the elite, beating Ruud 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to make it to the third round.
World No. 5 and last year's runner-up, Daniil Medvedev, also suffered a shock defeat as American Learner Tien beat him after a five-set thriller which saw three sets go to a tie-break. Medvedev did well to come back from two sets down but eventually relented as he lost 3-6, 6(4)-7, 7-6(7), 6-1, 6-7(10).
World No. 51, Naomi Osaka pulled off an upset as she beat 20th-seed Karolina Muchova 1-6, 6-1, 6-3. The four-time major winner, who hasn't triumphed on the WTA Tour since her 2021 Australian Open victory, has made it past the second round of a Grand Slam for the first time since returning from her maternity leave last year.
