One of tennis' most prominent couples of all time, Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf got married in 2001, and welcomed their firstborn child that same year. Two years after their son Jaden was born, the couple had their second child, their daughter Gaz.
This meant that for the 2004 season, Agassi and Graf had to travel around the world with not just one kid, but two. The American, for one, did not think that was an easy task at all, especially as it ate into his time with his wife.
Speaking at his pre-tournament press conference ahead of the 2004 Australian Open, the eight-time Grand Slam champion proclaimed that bringing two children with him to a Major was 10 times more work than when he brought just one child with him to the tournament.
The American lamented how, with two toddlers to take care of, he and Graf barely saw each other all day as they were busy running after at least one kid at a time. Agassi, in fact, admitted to himself that it was a situation that would continue on for the next couple of years at least, before things finally settled down for him and Steffi Graf.
"It's probably about ten-fold, to be quite honest. The toughest part I find, quite honestly, with one child, sort of you and your wife, you know, you play with the child, you feed the child," Andre Agassi said.
"You're doing it together. You feel it's the life you've always had, but now all of a sudden you have two, and I don't see her for hours at a time. At the end of the day you put your feet up and go, "Oh, doesn't this feel good. Maybe we should go to sleep so we're ready for tomorrow." So you don't do everything together very much anymore, for a period of time. We have to tough out the next year and a half," he added.
"Steffi Graf has already had to make adjustments" - Andre Agassi on traveling with two children
At the press conference, Andre Agassi also stated that his wife Steffi Graf was already making adjustments to her life to accomodate the needs of their two children. While the American disclosed that he had not changed anything at the time, he expected it to come sooner rather than later.
"One thing I know for sure is Stephanie's already had to make adjustments. You know, it's just extra work, you know, making sure that I'm in position to be at my best or to accept the compromise. I haven't compromised anything yet, as a specific answer to your question. But it's a lot of work to keep sort of that from happening," Andre Agassi said.
The former World No. 1 continued:
"I played 13 tournaments last year, kept myself in position to give myself a look at the big ones. And this year I'll have to do the same. I don't know if that's going to mean 13 tournaments, maybe one more, maybe one or two less. I feel like I'm constantly making decisions."
While Graf retired in 1999, two years before their marriage, Andre Agassi hung up his racket in 2006.
