As the new Wimbledon champion Andy Murray and World No. 1 Novak Djokovic were heading for the title clash, the announcement had been made that the duo would be heading for the Mubadala World Tennis Championship from December 26-28 which features world’s six best male tennis players.
This tournament is managed by FLASH Entertainment in partnership with Mubadala and IMG. Djokovic has already signed with IMG, and now talks of them signing Murray are on as well.
When asked about the possibility of signing Murray, Greg Sproule, IMG MD, Middle East and North Africa, refused to comment. He also refused to rule out the possibility of Roger Federer and Rafal Nadal playing in Abu Dhabi in the future. However, both these players have ended their contract with IMG and both skipped Miami – an IMG organised tournament – this year.
Murray’s presence at the event would definitely cheer fans up. Interestingly, the Wimbledon finalists haven’t faced each other at Zayed Sports City in previous two appearances. Novak Djokovic currently holds the Mubadala World Tennis Championship crown and will also try to win it thrice in a row. But it was Murray who won the inaugural title in 2009. However, at Abu Dhabi in 2012, he suffered a shock first round exit at the hands of Serbian Janko Tipsarevic.
