Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Jordan Thompson preview

Jordan Thompson will take on second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas on Friday (March 11) for a place in the Indian Wells third round.
World No. 87 Thompson opened his campaign with a win against comeback man Gael Monfils to improve to 2-4 on the season. The 28-year-old's only other win this year came in the opening round at Dallas (beating Denis Kudla). However, Thompson has arrived at Indian Wells off a title run at the Rome Challenger and is now six matches unbeaten across tours.
Meanwhile, the third-ranked Tsitispas has made a fine start to his 2023 campaign, losing just twice in 15 matches. However, he's coming off a second-round loss at Rotterdam to Jannik Sinner.
His first defeat of the season - to eventual winner Novak Djokovic - in the Australian Open final snapped the Greek's 10-0 winning start to the year.
Tsitsipas will now look to avoid stumbling in the opening round at Indian Wells, having done so four years ago to Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Jordan Thompson head-to-head
Thompson has lost both his previous matchups with Tsitsipas. That includes the pair's last meeting in the Wimbledon second round, which the Greek won in straight sets.

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Jordan Thompson prediction

Thompson and Tsitsipas prefer to play off the baseline, but the Greek has the edge, as he's the more consistent of the two players.
Tsitsipas is a powerful player - has a strong serve and can overwhelm opponents from the back of the court. The World No. 3 is also super consistent, making deep runs at the biggest of tournaments.
He's coming off a run to the Australian Open final, so the Greek's confidence will be sky-high as he seeks his first Indian Wells title. Thompson, on his part, should give a good account of himself, but he will likely fall short in his quest to reach the third round at Tsitsipas' expense.
Prediction: Tsitsipas in straight sets
