Nick Kyrgios has been missing from the ATP Tour for nearly two years. It all started with an ankle injury before the 2023 Australian Open, forcing him to withdraw from the tournament. His comeback was further delayed by a series of injuries to his wrist and foot, keeping him out of action for the entire 2023 and 2024 seasons.
Despite being sidelined from the ATP Tour, Kyrgios stayed active in the tennis world. He worked as an analyst for BBC and ESPN, offering his insights on the sport. He also frequently engaged with fans on social media, sharing his thoughts on the latest sporting news.
The Aussie's fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief as he is set to return to action soon. He has confirmed that he will play at the Australian Open, but before that, he’ll warm up for the first Major of the season at the Brisbane International, which begins on December 30.
"I will be playing the Australian Open this summer, Kyrgios said while speaking on a panel at SXSW in October. "I just miss being out there playing in front of a home crowd. We’ve got such a crowd of guys at the moment like Alex de Minaur playing amazing tennis."
"Whether it is good or bad, it will certainly be a lot of fun, for sure. I am looking forward to it … My only motivation to come back and play is to try and win a Grand Slam, and I’ll give it one more shot," he added.
Nick Kyrgios will enter the Melbourne Major with a protected ranking of World No. 21, joining six other men and six women, including Kei Nishikori and Belinda Bencic. He will be looking to claim his first Grand Slam, having come close in 2022 when he reached the Wimbledon final but lost to Novak Djokovic.
The 29-year-old's best performance at the tournament came in 2015 when he reached the quarterfinals, only to fall short against eventual finalist Andy Murray. Since then, he has not made it past the fourth round in singles.
However, Kyrgios has enjoyed success in doubles, winning the Australian Open men's doubles title in 2022 alongside his compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis.
