American Qualifier Alex Michelsen will take on Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic in the quarterfinal of the 2024 Japan Open. Michelsen has a 26-24 record in 2024, with two final appearances. He last played at the US Open, where he lost to eventual champion Jannik Sinner in the second round.

Michelsen has shown some good form on hard courts in recent months, reaching the final of the Winston-Salem Open (losing to Lorenzo Sonego), and the quarterfinal at the Citi Open (losing to Flavio Cobolli.) The World No. 49 reached the quarterfinal of the Los Cabos Open as well, losing to eventual champion Jordan Thompson.

At the Japan Open, Michelsen defeated Yasutaka Uchiyama and Borna Coric in the qualifiers to enter the main draw. The young American caused a massive upset when he defeated fourth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round. He then defeated another qualifier Christopher O' Connell in the second round to book a spot in the quarterfinal.

On the other hand, Tomas Machac has exhibited good form in recent tournaments. The Czech player has had a breakthrough year as he achieved a career-high ranking of 33. He reached the final in Geneva, which included a win over Novak Djokovic. He made a mark on the hard courts, reaching the quarterfinal at the Miami Open.

The Czech player has been in good form at the Japan Open. He defeated the in-form Australian Alexei Popyrin in three sets, in the first round. He then caused an upset, winning against fifth-seeded Tommy Paul in the second round in a third-set tiebreaker.

Against O'Connell, in the previous round, Micheslen put up a complete performance, winning 71 percent of the service points along with 46 percent of the return points. His winners-unforced ratio was 23-7 which is excellent by modern tennis standards. The American came to the net 18 times, winning 67 percent of the approach points.

Machac was not in his best form against Tommy Paul in the previous round. He won only 59 percent of his service points and 35 percent of the return points. The Czech player made as many as 51 unforced errors while hitting 33 winners. However, he performed well under pressure, saving 11 of the 15 break-point opportunities on his serve.
