Hailing from Brazil, tennis prodigy Joao Fonseca created havoc at the 2025 Australian Open by registering the biggest upset in the men’s draw as of January 15, 2025. The 18-year-old stunned No. 9 Andrey Rublev by registering a win in three sets (7-6(1), 6-3, 7-6(5)). In his career, Fonseca has lifted two Challenger titles as of January 2025, including the 2025 Canberra Tennis International. At the Canberra Tennis International, he defeated Ethan Quinn by 6-4 6-4. His accomplishments also include qualifying for the Next Generation ATP Finals in 2024, the lowest-ranked player to achieve the feat. Coached by Guilherme Teixeira, Fonseca finished as the semi-finalist at the Lyon Challenger and quarterfinalist at the Brest Challenger, losing to Calvin Hemery and Benjamin Bonzi, respectively.

He further added, "I’d be one of those kids with a ball playing on Copacabana beach and I was okay at it but, to be honest, I never seriously thought I could make a career out of it and when I picked up an injury playing, I decided soccer was not for me. It was a bit too dangerous."
