John Tomic denies assault charges, says he acted in self defence

Davis
2010 Australian Open - Day 3

John Tomic, the father of Australian tennis player Bernard Tomic, has denied assaulting his son’s former training partner Thomas Drouet. The incident happened outside a hotel on May 4 this year in Madrid, where Bernard was playing in the Madrid Masters. The senior Tomic further added that he acted in self defence, which left Drouet with a broken nose.

Tomic appeared in a Madrid court on Monday. The court heard evidences from both Bernard and John Tomic, Drouet and two police officers in the hearing.

The prosecutors reportedly demanded a two year jail term for Tomic. The court is expected to release its verdict within the next month. Drouet has stopped training with Bernard and has joined fellow French and Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli‘s training team. After the incident, John Tomic was banned from attending ATP events.
