Former World No. 4 Juan Martin del Potro’s much anticipated return will not happen at Indian Wells. The Argentine who featured in the Apia Sydney International earlier this year had withdrawn from the Australian Open citing a troublesome wrist injury that plagued him for much of last year.
The 2009 US Open champion has played just 5 tournaments since the 2013 season. He celebrated Argentina’s 3-2 win over Brazil with his compatriots in Buenos Aires on Monday. Del Potro, a runner-up here in 2013 was awarded a wild card for the tournament due to his current ranking of 618. Australian teenager Thanasi Kokkinakis has now been awarded the wild card.
Other players to withdraw from the tournament include David Giffin and Gael Monfils who were part of Davis Cup action over the weekend.
