One of the greatest talents to have emerged from the continent of Asia, Kei Nishikori is the only Tennis player from Japan to be ranked inside the ATP top-5 in the Open Era. Nishikori was born on December 29, 1989, in Matsue, Shimane, Japan. With 12 career singles titles to his name, the 34-year-old is a former US Open finalist as well as a Nitto ATP Finals semifinalist. With over $25 million to his name and a career-high ranking of World No. 4, he boasts a commendable record on the circuit.

Kei Nishikori began playing tennis at the age of five and left Japan to train in the USA when he was 14. After turning pro in 2007, Nishikori joined forces with legendary coach Brad Gilbert in 2010. After a great run in the mid-2010s, injuries plagued the Japanese’s career. Nishikori underwent an elbow surgery in 2019 and a hip surgery in 2022. As of mid-2024, Kei Nishikori is being coached by Max Mirnyi, Thomas Johansson, and Michael Chang.

How Many Olympic Medals Has Kei Nishikori Won?

Kei Nishikori has won one Olympic medal in his career. This came at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

In 2016, Kei Nishikori won his solitary Olympic medal - a bronze. He won it by defeating Rafael Nadal 6-2 6-7(1) 6-3. In his semifinal encounter, Nishikori lost 1-6 4-6 to Great Britain’s Andy Murray. Nonetheless, he became the first men’s singles Olympic medalist from Japan since 1920.

Kei Nishikori's Olympics Journey

Kei Nishikori has participated in four Olympic Games. Having just turned pro before the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Nishikori failed to win a medal in China. After failing to impress in the 2012 London Games, he won bronze in Rio 2016 by defeating the likes of Gael Monfils, and Rafael Nadal.

At the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Kei Nishikori received tremendous support from his Japanese home crowd. He managed to beat Russian ace Andrey Rublev before crashing out in the quarterfinals at the hands of 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic.
