Latest ATP Rankings: Somdev stays put at 188th, Saketh slips two spots to 302

India’s highest ranked men’s singles player Somdev Devvarman managed to retain his last week’s position of 188 in the latest ATP rankings.

Somdev has made it to the second round of the men’s singles of the French Open after defeating Spain’s 145th ranked Pablo Carreno-Busta 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 and is now drawn to next meet world number three Roger Federer.

The Indian had made the main draw after getting the better of 113th ranked American Wayne Odesnik in the final qualifying tie.

Somdev is expected to move up in the rankings considering the fact that he has beaten two players ranked higher than him. A great show against Roger Federer could see him hover around the top-100.

The Indian had earlier reached the semifinals of the ATP Sarasota Challenger clay-court tennis tournament, where he put it across 93rd ranked Jesse Levine of Canada in the first round before toppling the 152nd ranked German Mischa Zverev in the quarterfinals.

He is on a comeback trail after a lingering shoulder injury consigned him to the sidelines for more than nine months in 2012.

Somdev has been regularly taking part in ATP events only since late last year. He had reached a career-high ATP ranking of 62 in July 2011. Earlier this year, he took on world number one Novak Djokovic in the third round of the Miami Masters and lost in straight sets to the Serb.

Saketh Myneni, who recently became the country’s second highest ranked singles player, fell two spots to be at 302nd. The 25-year-old had won both the Chandigarh and Rohtak Futures recently.

Among the other Indian men’s singles players, Prakash Amritraj, son of legendary Vijay Amritraj, who clambered fifty-seven spots last week recently on the back of his recent semifinal finish in the ATP Karshi Challenger in Uzbekistan, moved up one spot to occupy the 314th position.

Sanam Singh dropped one place to be at 339th while N Sriram Balaji also fell one spot to be ranked 349th.

Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan clung on to his last week’s ranking of 403rd.

The tale of gloom continues for Yuki Bhambri as he dropped two places to be 413th.

Vishnu Vardhan advanced one spot to be 421st.

Among the Indian women, Ankita Raina continues to be the country’s highest ranked women’s singles player, climbing five spots to be 455th.

Rishika Sunkara also advanced four places to be ranked 471st.

Prerna Bhambri – cousin of Ankita and Sanaa Bhambri – moved up two spots to be ranked 513th.

Prarthana Thombare slipped two spots to be placed 580th. Same was the case with Nidhi Chilumula who occupies the 586th spot.
