Learner Tien vs Lorenzo Sonego preview
19-year-old qualifier Learner Tien will face World No. 55 Lorenzo Sonego in the fourth of the Australian Open 2025 on Monday (Jan. 20).
The American teenager has had great success in the last few months. He reached the final of the Next Gen Finals, where he lost to Joao Fonseca, and then qualified for the Australian Open in his debut appearance.
Tien defeated Argentina's Camilo Ugo Carabelli in a marathon five-set match in the first round, which lasted almost four hours.
Although he did not drop a set against Corentin Moutet in the third round, but he has already spent more than 11 hours on court for his first three matches.
On the other hand, Lorenzo Sonego has also spent more than 10 hours on court for his first three matches at the 2025 Australian Open.
The 29-year-old Italian defeated the 2014 Australian Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka 6-4, 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 in the first round. After beating the 39-year-old veteran, Sonego edged 18-year-old Joao Fonseca in five sets in his second round match.
In the third round, Sonego dropped the first set in a tie-break against Fabian Marozsan and was three set points down at 3-6 in the second set tie-break. He made a great comeback to win the second set and then won the next two sets to triumph 6-7(3), 7-6(6), 6-1, 6-2.

Learner Tien vs Lorenzo Sonego prediction
World No. 121 Tien, who will break into the Top 100 for the first time when the ranking will be released on January 27th. He had not won a main draw Grand Slam match before the 2025 Australian Open.
It is a great opportunity for him as he would be facing an unseeded opponent. Tien is already the youngest player to reach the fourth round at the Australian Open, since 18-year-old Rafael Nadal reached the fourth round in 2005.
Meanwhile, Sonego had won only six matches in his first six main draw appearances at the Australian Open. He is into the fourth round at the Australian Open for the first time. The Italian has never reached the quarterfinal in his previous 25 main draw appearances at Grand Slams.
Interestlingly, Sonego will face a third player at the Australian Open, who is ranked outside the Top 100, as he defeated Stanislas Wawrinka (156) and Joao Fonseca (112). Even his third-round opponent Marozsan was ranked below him, so has been lucky with the draw for sure, but Tien seems to be more motivated at the moment.
Pick: Tien to win in five sets.
