Junior Grand Slam winner Leylah Fernandez is a Canadian tennis player with a career-high ranking of No. 13. She is back on the court to defend her title at the Hong Kong Open, where she will face Heather Watson. Fernandez gave tough competition to Qinwen Zheng in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Japan Open despite losing the first set by 6-0. She first came into prominence with her incredible performance at the 2021 US Open. She defeated defending champion Naomi Osaka, Elina Svitolina, and Aryna Sabalenka to reach her maiden Grand Slam final.

As of January 2025, Fernandez has won three WTA titles, including the 2023 Hong Kong Open and the 2022 and 2021 Monterrey Open. She registered her first top-five-ranked win since the 2021 US Open at the 2024 Cincinnati Open. Fernandez registered victory over Elena Rybakina and Diana Shnaider to reach the quarterfinals. She also competes in doubles format and finished runner-up at the 2023 French Open with Taylor Townsend.

Her triumphs continued as she reached the WTA 1000 finals in doubles at the Cincinnati Open with Yulia Putintseva. She played a crucial role in helping Canada win the 2023 Billie Jean King Cup. She reached the semifinal of the 2024 Hong Kong Open, where she lost to top seed Diana Shnaider.

Jorge Fernandez is the coach of Leylah Fernandez. He was a football player before becoming a coach for her daughter despite not knowing tennis. He has competed for many local football clubs in Montreal. Jorge Fernandez also trains his other daughter, Bianca Jolie Fernandez.

During the latter half of 2022, former ATP tennis player Julian Alonso joined the coaching team of Fernandez. Known for his powerful forehand and service, Alonso is the founder of the Elite Tennis Team, which aims to develop the careers of junior players. Besides Fernandez, he also coaches Arantxa Rus and Olympian gold medalists Qinwen Zheng and Ajla Tomljanovic. Alonso has won two ATP titles in singles and the ATP Newcomer of the Year award after lifting his first title in Santiago.

During an interview with Punto de Break, Alonso said he had met a soldier on the court. He added that Fernandez faces everything with great determination and can adapt. If asked to appear at 7:00 for training, she is already warming up at 6:40, indicating an impeccable work ethic.

Leylah Fernandez's WTA Titles

As of 2025, Fernandez has won three WTA singles titles – the 2023 Hong Kong Open, the 2022 and the 2021 Monterrey Open. At the 2023 Hong Kong Open, Fernandez won her first WTA title, defeating Katerina Siniakova by 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. She registered wins against Anna Blinkova, Mirra Andreeva, and Victoria Azarenka en route.
