Born on September 6, 2002, Leylah Fernandez is a Canadian tennis sensation earning success in singles and doubles. She is ranked No. 31 in singles by WTA as of January 2025, with a career-high ranking of No. 13 achieved on August 8, 2022. Her best Grand Slam singles performance was recorded at the 2021 US Open, where she finished runner-up. She advanced to the finals, defeating three top seeds - Aryna Sabalenka, Elina Svitolina, and defending champion Naomi Osaka. In doubles, she finished finalist at the 2023 French Open with Taylor Townsend.

As of January 2025, she has registered three WTA singles titles: the 2023 Hong Kong Open, the 2022 and the 2021 Monterrey Open. Despite having a career-high ranking of No. 17 achieved on October 23, 2023, in doubles, she has yet to win any title. Fernandez is known for playing a pivotal win role in helping Canada lift the 2023 Billie Jean King Cup. She beat Italian top seed Jasmine Paolini in the final. With the win, she received the Heart Award in both the finals and the qualifier categories.

Leylah Fernandez has yet to win an Olympic medal in her career since January 2025. She participated in the 2024 Paris Olympic games in 2024 in both singles and doubles. In singles, she made it to the third round by defeating Cristina Bucsa and Karolina Muchnova. However, she lost to Angelique Kerber in the third round by 6-4, 6-3. With Gabriela Dabrowski, she competed in the doubles category of the 2024 Paris Olympics. The duo registered a win against Clara Burel and Varvara Gracheva of France in the first round. Fernandez and Dabrowski lost to eventual silver medalists Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider in the second round. She also competed in the 2020 Olympic Games for her country, Canada.

Jorge Fernandez is Leylah Fernandez's current coach. Despite being a former football player, he learned about tennis to train his daughters, Bianca and Leylah Fernandez. He has participated in various matches for a local football club in Montreal. In addition, Leylah Fernandez was also coached by Julian Alonso in 2022. Alonso has coached Ajla Tomljanovic, top seed Qinwen Zheng, and Arantxa Rus.
