Lorenzo Sonego is a professional player from Italy ranked No. 55 as of January 2025. He achieved his career-high ranking of No. 21 on October 4, 2021. His best Grand Slam performance includes reaching the quarterfinal of the 2025 Australian Open. He prevailed over Learner Tien, Stan Wawrinka, and Fabian Marozsan en route to face Ben Shelton in the quarterfinals. As of January 2025, Sonego has won four singles and two doubles titles on the ATP circuit. His last title came at the 2024 Winston-Salem Open.

Sonego won the Winston-Salem Open by defeating Alex Michelsen in the final and David Goffin in the semifinals. By winning the trophy, he became the eleventh active player to win on all surfaces (clay, grass, and hard). Making his ATP debut at the 2016 Italian Open, he won his first Challenger at the 2017 Sparkassen Challenger. Sonego first came to prominence after registering a win over Novak Djokovic at the semifinal of the 2020 Vienna Open. He advanced to his first Masters 1000 semifinal at the 2021 Rome Open after defeating top seed Dominic Thiem and Andrey Rublev.

Fabio Colangelo is the coach of Lorenzo Sonego. The duo joined hands on April 8, 2024, when Sonego bid adieu to his former coach Gipo Arbino. Former Italian player Colangelo achieved the career-high ranking of No. 154 on June 9, 2008. He is known for appearing in three doubles tournaments and winning four Challenger tournaments. As of January 2025, he has won around $85,821 as prize money in his career. He has also worked as a technical director of the Circolo della Stampa Sporting to train young talents.

Sonego and Colangelo have been practicing at the Rafa Nadal Academy and stayed at Nadal's house before traveling to Hong Kong. Colangelo will not be joining Sonego during his tournament as he is involved as a commentator for Sky. Before Colangelo, he was trained by Gipo Arbino.

Selected as the Teacher of the Year for the Project I Tennis Foundation, Arbino started training with Sonego when he was 11. In an interview with I Tennis Foundation, he shared that he first met Sonego when he came to compete in the SAT. He added that since Sonego had played football earlier, he had great technical and rebounding skills. Sonego shared in an interview regarding the change in his coaching team:

"I feel the need for a new stimulus for the second half of my career."
