Madison Keys vs Elena-Gabriela Ruse preview
The second round of the 2025 Australian Open will have Madison Keys lock horns with Elena-Gabriela Ruse in an exciting encounter on Thursday.
Keys, the 19th seed at this year’s tournament, has come into the tournament in red-hot shape. She lifted a WTA 500 title in Adelaide just days ago, beating the likes of Jessica Pegula, Daria Kasatkina, and Jelena Ostapenko en route. She was a quarterfinalist in Auckland.
The season’s 8-1 start that Keys has gotten off to is right up there with the best and she will look to carry the momentum deep into the Australian Open.
Ruse, meanwhile, is playing in her first tournament of the season. She has, however, raked in four match wins including three in the qualification rounds.
The Romanian began her campaign with a dominant display against Leonie Kung before taking out Anna-Lena Friedsam and Emilia Bektas to make the main draw. She then dropped only four games en route to a 6-4, 6-0 win over compatriot Irina Camelia Begu to improve her season’s win-loss to 4-0.
Madison Keys vs Elena-Gabriela Ruse head-to-head

Madison Keys vs Elena-Gabriela Ruse prediction
The two players enjoy playing aggressively but employ vastly different groundstroke techniques.
Keys likes to hit the ball flat and fast while her opponent puts more topspin on the ball (especially on the forehand side). In the quick conditions Down Under, the former should have a slight edge as the courts reward speed over shape.
The American tends to go off-kilter when pitted against strong defensive players but her recent run inspires confidence.
Ruse is a great fighter but she will have to find a way to get on the front foot and not allow Keys to take control. Unless she can do that, she risks being blown away by her opponent’s firepower.
Pick: Keys to win in three sets.
