Madison Keys' impressive start to 2025 continues, as she reached her fourth Australian Open quarterfinal after beating sixth seed Elena Rybakina. The American's impressive run comes just months after she got married to Bjorn Fratangelo, who is currently her coach as well.
Keys and Fratangelo started dating in 2017, the year when the former reached her only Grand Slam singles final to date. The couple got engaged in March 2023 and got married on November 23, 2024.
Not long after her wedding, Keys started her 2025 season at the ASB Classic in Auckland. She reached the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 event before losing to eventual champion Clara Tauson.
The American followed this up with a victorious run at the Adelaide International, where she beat the likes of Beatriz Haddad Maia, Jelena Ostapenko, Daria Kasatkina and Liudmila Samsonova to reach the final. Here, she beat compatriot Jessica Pegula 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 to clinch her ninth WTA singles title.
Keys entered the Australian Open as the 19th seed and reached the third round following wins over Ann Li and Elena-Gabriela Ruse. Here, the 29-year-old faced tenth seed Danielle Collins and beat her 6-4, 6-4 to set up a fourth-round clash with sixth seed Elena Rybakina.
The American got off to a fine start as she won the opening set 6-3. However, the Kazakh roared back into the match by winning the second set 6-1 and forcing the match into a decider. The third set was tied at 3-3 before Keys won the next three games, that included breaking Rybakina's serve twice, to register a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 win and a place in the Australian Open quarterfinals for the first time since 2022.
It has been an impressive 2025 so far for Madison Keys, as she has won 11 out of 12 matches under the tutelage of her husband Bjorn Fratangelo.
Madison Keys teases husband and coach Bjorn Fratangelo as she talks about pros and cons of married life
Madison Keys spoke to former player Jelena Dokic after her win over Danielle Collins in the third round of the Australian Open. When asked about the pros and cons of married life, the 29-year-old spoke about getting to see Fratangelo daily.
"It's great that we get to see each other. He used to play as well, so we would go long periods of time without seeing each other, so it's wonderful seeing him," Keys said.
The World No. 14 also joked that she isn't too fond of admitting that Fratangelo is right.
"Having to admit that he's right isn't always my favorite thing, and it happens a lot more than I want it to, but I'm learning to just kind of nod and he just knows that I'm saying that he's right," Keys said.
After defeating Rybakina, the 29-year-old will next take on 28th seed Elina Svitolina in the Australian Open quarterfinals. The two will lock horns for the sixth time, with the American currently leading 3-2 in their head-to-head.
