Alexander Zverev vs Denis Shapovalov preview
Fourth seed Alexander Zverev squares off against Denis Shapovalov in the third round of the 2024 Madrid Open on Sunday.
After a first-round bye, Zverev was up against Borna Coric in the second round, who reached the semifinals a year ago. Both sets unfolded in the same manner, as the German went on four-game runs in each set to register a comfortable 6-3, 6-2 win.
Shapovalov, meanwhile, beat Facundo Diaz Acosta 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to book a second-round showdown against 26th seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry. The Canadian squandered his lead twice in the first set and blew a set point before claiming it in a tiebreak.
Shapovalov surged to a 4-1 lead in the second set, a deficit from which Etcheverry couldn't recover. The former top 10 player remained in front to score a 7-6 (3), 6-3 win.

Alexander Zverev vs Denis Shapovalov prediction
Zverev scored a pretty comfortable win over Coric to begin his quest for a third title in Madrid. He didn't face a break point and won 81 percent of his first-serve points.
Meanwhile, after a slow start to the season, Shapovalov's campaign seems to be picking up some steam. He reached the third round of the Miami Open last month and has done the same in Madrid.
Zverev and Shapovalov's rivalry has been quite competitive. The German leads the overall head-to-head and won their only match on clay, at the 2018 Madrid Open.
Zverev has a great track record in Madrid. Aside from his two titles, he hasn't lost prior to the fourth round. Additionally, Carlos Alcaraz is the only player to beat him the last two years, with the Spaniard winning the title both times.
A resurgent Shapovalov could give Zverev a run for his money. However, the German simply loves competing in Madrid, as the conditions suit his game perfectly. Given Zverev's impressive record at the venue and head-to-head advantage against his opponent, it's tough to see him go out early.
Pick: Alexander Zverev to win in straight sets
