Jannik Sinner vs Lorenzo Sonego preview
Top seed Jannik Sinner will open his campaign in Madrid against compatriot Lorenzo Sonego in the second round on Saturday, April 27.
Sinner has undoubtedly had his best start to a season this year. He triumphed in Melbourne by lifting his first-ever Grand Slam title with a gritty comeback win against Daniil Medvedev in the final. He carried that sublime form into Rotterdam, winning his second title of the year on the back of a commanding performance against Alex de Minaur.
He lost his first match of the year at the BNP Paribas Open where he fell to Carlos Alcaraz in the last four. He turned things around very quickly, however, lifting his third title of the year in Miami. He beat Grigor Dimitrov in the final to clinch the title on his fourth attempt.
He played his first match on the red dirt in Monte-Carlo a couple of weeks ago. He was halted in the semis by eventual champion Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Lorenzo Sonego, meanwhile, holds a 6-12 W/L record this season. His best result came in Morocco at the Grand Prix Hassan II where he reached the quarters, losing to compatriot Matteo Berretini. He also reached the round of 16 in Monte-Carlo a couple of weeks ago, losing to Ugo Humbert in a tight three-setter despite taking the first set.
Sonego already kicked off his campaign in Madrid with a 6-2, 7-5 win over French veteran Richard Gasquet in the first round.

Jannik Sinner vs Lorenzo Sonego prediction
Lorenzo Sonego took the high road in set two during his first-round encounter but ultimately came out on top thanks to some brilliant strokeplay. He's now won 3 out of his 5 matches on clay this season and will look to extend that run after having started indifferently on the hard courts at the start of the year.
Sinner, meanwhile, heads into the encounter on the back of an impressive run at Monte-Carlo. His W/L record this season stands at 25-2 and it doesn't look like he is losing another match anytime soon. Credit must be given to his consistency and impeccable baseline game, two facets that have been superb since the start of the year.
While Sonego has lost all four encounters in the past against Sinner, this might just be his best chance to challenge his compatriot given his run of form. He will, however, have to serve incredibly well and keep knocking on Sinner's serve if he is to have a chance.
Despite Sonego's good form heading into this encounter, Sinner is the favorite to go through given his experience on the big stage and power-packed game.
Pick: Jannik Sinner in straight sets.
