Ben Shelton vs Paul Jubb preview

Two talented youngsters, Ben Shelton and Paul Jubb, will lock horns on June 27 for a place in the semifinals of the 2024 Mallorca Championships.

Shelton, the top seed at this year’s tournament, got his grasscourt season underway a little later than he would have liked with an empathic 6-4, 6-0 win over Rinky Hijikata in the second round in Mallorca.

The American had earlier lost in the opening rounds of Stuttgart and Queen’s Club, with the defeats dragging his season’s overall win-loss down to 19-13.

Jubb, meanwhile, finds himself through to his first ATP Tour-level quarterfinal. In fact, he has already won four matches this week having come through the qualification rounds. He had taken out top seed Thiago Monteiro in the final round of the qualifiers.

The Brit then eased past Maximilian Marterer and Adam Walton, dropping only six games in the two matches to log his first main draw victories of the season.

Ben Shelton vs Paul Jubb head-to-head

Shelton and Jubb have never crossed paths on the Tour before, so their current head-to-head stands at a 0-0 deadlock.

Ben Shelton vs Paul Jubb prediction

Shelton will be favorie to win the contest.
Shelton will be favorie to win the contest.

Ben Shelton’s big serve can be a huge weapon on grass, but his unfamiliarity with the surface has come to the fore time and again.

The American stumbled in the second round of Wimbledon last year. He also failed to win a single match in his two tournaments this season despite firing 30 aces.

Against a greenhorn in the form of first-time quarterfinalist Paul Jubb, Shelton finds himself in a rather comfortable position. The Brit has been solid in his matches this week, but he is yet to play an opponent ranked higher than No. 84.

The lack of big match experience may come to the fore if things get tight. Shelton’s serve was winning nearly 70% of the total points behind serve (first and second combined) and if he can keep the numbers up, he should be able to sail through.

Pick: Ben Shelton to win in straight sets.
