Monfils has had an underwhelming season so far this year. Apart from a semi-final appearance at the Qatar Open, where he lost to Jakub Mensik, the former World No. 6 has not had too many deep runs in the tournaments that he has participated in.
Moreover, the ongoing Mallorca Championships is the only grass-court tournament Monfils has played this season. In the first round, Monfils took out 2021 US Open champion Dominic Thiem 6-3, 7-6(3). Alejandro Tabilo, on the other hand, is having a good 2024 season thus far. The Chilean won the Auckland Open earlier in the year, defeating Taro Daniel in the final. He also made it to the final at his home tournament, the Chile Open, eventually losing to Sebastian Baez. He had an incredible run to the Italian Open semifinal during the clay-court season, where he was defeated by Alexander Zverev.
Tabilo has played at the Queen's Club Championships in the grass-court season, where he lost to eventual champion Tommy Paul in the second round. At the ongoing Mallorca Championships, the Chilean got a bye in the first round, courtesy of his high seeding. He won against Alexander Shevchenko in the second round in straight sets. He got a similar straight-sets win over Jakub Mensik in the quarter-final.
