Maria Sharapova can afford to relax in front of La Tour Eiffel after emphatically defeating Sara Errani 6-3,6-2 in the recently concluded French Open 2012. This win has given her a career Grand Slam, becoming only the sixth women in the Open era to achieve this rare feat. Although she had a dry spell for four long years, the new World no.1 will definitely be the favorite to win Wimbledon later this year.
At a time when women’s tennis appears to be rather faceless, Sharapova has been among the few consistent performers. At the age of 25, Sharapova has around 5 more years of tennis left in her. She has already won 27 WTA singles and has been the World no. 1 on 5 different occasions. Who knows how many Grand Slams she would have won by now but for her shoulder injury which forced her to miss 10 months of tennis in 2008-09.
Her strong backhand always leaves her competitors guessing. She’s got a great serve and terrific foot speed for a 6’2″ player. Sharapova is one of the tallest players ever to grace a women’s court and has used her long legs effectively to cover the maximum amount of ground.
Recently, it has been announced that she will hold Russian flag in the upcoming 2012 London Olympics. It is an incredible honor, that which is rarely given to a woman.
She has become a national hero and arguably one of the best women’s players of all time.
Let’s hope that she remains injury-free, and if that’s the case, we will definitely see her winning many more Grand Slams till she calls it quits.
Davaj Sharapova !! Wish you all the luck …
